Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

What is the GRE General Test?

The GRE General Test is a standardized exam administered by the Educational Testing Service (ETS) for admission to many graduate-level, business, and law school programs worldwide. (ETS)

Here are the updated features and structure of the GRE General Test:

  • The newer format was implemented starting 22 September 2023.
  • Duration: Approximately 1 hour 58 minutes (roughly 2 hours) under the new format.
  • Sections and Questions under the New Pattern:
  • Analytical Writing: 1 task (“Analyze an Issue”) – 30 minutes.
  • Verbal Reasoning: 2 sections – first 12 questions (18 minutes), second ~15 questions (23 minutes).
  • Quantitative Reasoning: 2 sections – first 12 questions (21 minutes), second ~15 questions (26 minutes).
  • Adaptivity: The test uses a section-level adaptive design — the second section of Verbal and Quantitative may vary in difficulty based on performance in the first section.
  • Scoring Scales:
  • Verbal Reasoning: 130–170 (1-point increments)
  • Quantitative Reasoning: 130–170
  • Analytical Writing: 0–6 (in half-point increments)

Key changes in the GRE format include:

  • The overall duration was reduced from ~3h45m to ~1h58m.
  • The number of questions in Verbal and Quantitative sections was reduced.
  • The Analytical Writing section now includes only one task (“Analyze an Issue”) instead of two (Issue + Argument).
  • Unscored (experimental) sections have been removed or modified.
  • Verbal Reasoning: Reading Comprehension passages, Text Completion, Sentence Equivalence, and Select-in-Passage.
  • Quantitative Reasoning: Quantitative Comparison, Multiple-Choice (single and multiple correct), Numeric Entry, and Data Interpretation (arithmetic, algebra, geometry, statistics & probability).
  • Analytical Writing: “Analyze an Issue” task—express, support, and organize your argument clearly and logically.
Are there eligibility requirements or limits on attempts?
  • There is no strict age limit for taking the GRE.
  • Educational background: The GRE is open to graduates and final-year undergraduates, but anyone with valid identification can register.
  • Attempt limits: You can take the GRE up to five times in a rolling 12-month period, with a minimum 21-day gap between attempts.
  • Register through the official ETS GRE website by selecting your preferred test date and location.
  • Fees: Vary by country. (Check the official ETS website for current fees in your region.)
  • Score Validity: GRE scores are valid for 5 years from the test date.
  • The test is shorter (about 2 hours), so time management is crucial—practice with timed mocks.
  • Understand the section-level adaptive design: the second section may be harder if you perform well in the first.
  • Use the “Mark & Review” feature to revisit questions when possible.
  • Prepare with official ETS practice materials, as the format has changed recently.
  • In Analytical Writing, focus on producing a clear, structured, and well-reasoned essay under time constraints.
  • Always check the latest ETS official bulletin for updates on test availability, format, or fees. (ETS)
