Digital SAT
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
What is the Digital SAT?
The Digital SAT is the new online version of the SAT exam conducted by the College Board. It tests students’ skills in Reading, Writing, and Math, and is taken on a laptop or tablet instead of paper.
How is the Digital SAT different from the old paper SAT?
- Shorter (around 2 hours 14 minutes instead of 3 hours)
- Section-wise adaptive, meaning the test adjusts its difficulty based on performance
- Calculators allowed throughout the Math section
- Faster score reports (within a few days)
- Conducted entirely online using the Bluebook app
Who should take the SAT?
Students in Grade 11 or early Grade 12 planning to apply for undergraduate programs abroad (especially in the U.S., Canada, or Europe).
What is the ideal time to start Digital SAT preparation?
Ideally, 8–10 months before the exam, usually in Grade 10 or early Grade 11, allowing enough time to:
• Build strong foundations in Reading, Writing, and Math
• Develop test strategies and time management skills
• Practice with mock tests and adapt to the digital format
Early start = Top performance!
How do students register for the Digital SAT?
Registration is done online through the College Board account at www.collegeboard.org.
Students must:
• Create an account
• Choose their test date and location
• Pay the registration fee online
• Note: Registration usually opens 6–8 weeks before each test date
What device is required to take the test?
Students can use a laptop or tablet (Windows, Mac, or iPad) with the Bluebook app installed.
If a student doesn’t have a device, College Board can provide one on test day upon prior request.
How can students prepare for the Digital SAT?
Preparation can include:
- Official practice tests on Bluebook and Khan Academy
- Structured coaching programs for strategy and timed practice
- Regular mock tests to improve accuracy, confidence, and speed
Are calculators allowed in the Digital SAT Math section?
Yes! Students can use the built-in Desmos calculator in Bluebook or their own approved calculator throughout the Math section.
How are scores calculated in the Digital SAT?
The SAT score ranges from 400–1600, combining:
- Reading & Writing (200–800)
- Math (200–800)
The adaptive format ensures fair scoring across all test versions.
How long are SAT scores valid?
SAT scores remain valid for five years from the test date.
Can students take the SAT more than once?
Yes. Most students take the SAT 2–3 times to improve their scores.
Many colleges consider the best section scores across attempts — known as Superscoring.
How do students send their Digital SAT scores to universities?
Students can send their scores directly through their College Board account:
- During registration: Select up to 4 universities to receive scores for free.
- After the exam: Additional reports can be sent for a small fee per university.
- Score availability: Released within a few days after the test.
- Superscoring: Many universities consider the highest section scores.
- Tip: Always check application deadlines before sending scores.
